6th Grade Supply List

General Supplies:

These items will help your student be prepared and stay organized!

  • A Way to Store and Organize Papers by Class. A Binder or Accordion File OR Pocket Folders for each class (Students will carry their laptop to many classes and they will also get paper hand-outs so they need a way to organize those that can easily be transported to and from school. Some students may be happiest with a large fabric binder but some may find that cumbersome and prefer a smaller plastic 3-ring binder or accordion file. Please make sure they have a way to separate papers for each class, binder sections or pocket folders!)
  • No. 2 pencils – (Students will likely need to re-up on pencils throughout the year!)
  • 4 Composition Notebooks with lined paper (both wide or college ruled are fine)
  • 1 pack (50-100 sheets) of lined notebook paper
  • Pencil pouch (unless your binder has a place to store writing utensils)
  • Colored pencils or colored markers (consider an additional pouch or bin to store these when not in use)
  • Calculator (does not need to be scientific for 6th grade math)
  • One Computer Mouse (either wireless or USB) With Mousepad

Additional Optional Items Students might find it useful to have these:

  • erasers
  • a sharpie for labeling composition notebooks, etc.
  • glue sticks
  • black or blue pens

***Please check your students supplies mid-year! Students will likely need more pencils and maybe other supplies such as lined paper and post-its as they use these up!

Collective Supplies & Philosophy

In addition to this list, Salmon Bay will also have a fee of approximately $40 for collective classroom supplies for everyday use and special projects. We know many families come from elementary schools where all supplies were provided. As students move into middle school and start to have more independence and responsibility, we have found that buying supplies can help them create their own organization system instead of a one size fits all approach. We have worked to shorten this list to the most important day to day items to help students stay organized. Many of these items are also things we have found middle schoolers like to “personalize” with a choice color, design or function. Sometimes it does take a couple tries to find an organization system that work for each individual kid!

If your family needs help purchasing school supplies, please reach out to Counselor Rob Bright: rabright@seattleschools.org If possible, before the end of this school year so supplies can be ready for the start of school in the fall.
